3 Good Reasons Why You Should Travel Now

I recently read a blog entry that really spoke my heart and mind when it comes to traveling. I found myself nodding in agreement to every word, every phrase, every sentence. You know, I'm a nomadic at heart. I am in my happiest state whenever I'm in another place discovering cultures, people, food, places. Look at my travel photos, that's when I look the most inspired, fresh and as my good friend Aiza said, blooming daw. Haha!

Well, I have only toured Asian countries (my ultimate dream? Paris!) and of course Pinas! Each trip (even if it's just an hour away like Intramuros!) never fails to make my heart fuller (is that even the right term?) from joy, amazement and appreciation. I always end up bringing home something (tangible or not) that I would remember forever and somewhat changed. :)

3 Reasons to Travel While You’re Young

(Click here to visit Jeff's woNderful blog)

The other night, I had a conversation with a young woman who had a number of decisions ahead of her, one of which was whether she should go to grad school or travel the world.
I told her to travel. Hands down. No excuse. Just go.
She sighed.

“Yeah, but…”

Never were more fatal words spoken.
Yeah, but… what about debt?Yeah, but… what about my job?Yeah, but… what about my boyfriend (or dog or car or whatever)?
“Yeah, but…” is pernicious. Because it makes it sound like we have the best of intentions when really we are just too scared to do what we should.
It allows us to be cowards, while sounding noble.
Most people I know who waited to travel the world never did. Conversely, plenty of people who waited for grad school or a steady job and traveled still did those things — eventually.
Be careful of the yeah-but. The yeah-but will kill your dreams.
I was so stirred by this conversation that I shared it with a group of about thirty young adults last night, many of which were asking these very questions.

The life you’ve always wanted

When you get older, life seems to just sort of happen to you. Your youth is a time of total empowerment.
You get to do what you want. As you mature and gain new responsibilities, you have to be very intentional about making sure you don’t lose sight of what’s important.
So if you still have a reasonable amount of control over your circumstances, you should do what really matters. Because life won’t always be just about you.
During early adulthood, your worldview is still being formed. It’s important to steward this time — to give yourself opportunities to grow. A good way to do that is to travel.
So, young person, travel.
Travel wide and far.
Travel boldly.
Travel with full abandon.
You will regret few risks you take, when it comes to this. I promise you.
There are three reasons to travel while you’re young:

1. Traveling teaches you to live an adventure

When you look back on your life, you will have moments of which you are proud and maybe a few you regret. It’s likely that the following won’t be on the latter list:
  • Bicycled across the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Appeared on Italian TV.
  • Hiked a Mayan ruin.
  • Learned Spanish in three months.
  • Toured Europe by train.
They’re not on mine (fun fact: I’ve done all of the above).
What, then, will be?
  • Holding back.
  • Being afraid.
  • Making excuses.
  • Not taking more risks.
  • Waiting.
While you’re young, you should travel.
You should take the time to see the world and taste the fullness of life. It’s worth whatever investment or money or sacrifice of time required on your part.
It’s not about being a tourist. It’s about experiencing true risk and adventure so you don’t have to live in fear for the rest of your life.

2. Traveling helps you encounter compassion

In your youth, you will make choices that will define you. The disciplines you begin now will be with you for the rest of your life.
Traveling will change you like little else can. It will put you in places that will force you to care for issues that are bigger than you.
If you go to southeast Asia, you may encounter the slave trade. If eastern Europe, you may see the effects of genocide and religious persecution. If Haiti, you’ll witness the the ugly side Western paternalism.
Your heart will break.
You will begin to understand that the world is both a big and small place. You will have a new-found respect for the pain and suffering that over half of the world takes for granted on a daily basis. And you will feel more connected to your fellow human beings in a deep and lasting way.
You will learn to care.

3. Traveling allows you to get some culture

While you’re still young, you should get cultured. Get to know the world and the magnificent people that fill it.
There’s nothing quite like walking alongside the Coliseum or seeing Michelangelo’s David in person. I can describe the city of San Juan and its amazing beaches and historic sites to you, but you really have to see it for yourself to experience it. You can read all the books in the world about the Great Wall of China or The Louvre, but being there is a different story.
The world is a stunning place, full of outstanding works of art. See it.
Do this while you’re still young. Do not squander this time. You will never have it again.
You have a crucial opportunity to invest in the next season of your life now. Whatever you sow, you will eventually reap.
Please. For your sake, do this.
You won’t always be young. And life won’t always be just about you. So travel. Experience the world for all it’s worth. Become a person of culture, adventure, and compassion.

“What if I’m not young?”

Travel, anyway. It may not be easy to do, but find a way to get out of your comfort zone. It’s really never too late.
But if you haven’t gotten sucked into the routine of life yet, I implore you — travel. It will never be easier than it is right now for you to do that which really matters.

I hope this inspired you :) As for me, I have Cambodia, Beijing and South Korea to my places to go to list! I'm so excited to see Angkor Wat, the Great Wall of China and walk the streets of Korea. :) Know that I'm not rich and I do save up when I travel. My next traveling article would be "How to travel in budget". Watch out for it!:)

Oh Travel

Okay. I'm starting to hate Cebu Pacific. Everytime they conduct their seasonal promo fares I always book a trip someplace. I think I'm gonna finish off all Asian countries this year. Hopefully. More promo fares pls? Haha.

I booked a flight to Vietnam for April. Hongkong and Macau's fare is actually cheaper but you can't just bring P5K and expect to survive there. That's why I just opted for Vietnam. I was choosing between that or Malaysia but I thought I could visit Malaysia later. Maybe even make a sidetrip to Singapore too.

So why Vietnam? Coz it's cheap there. The hotels are cheap, the food, everything. I already have a list of hotels to choose from. And the most expensive room rate I saw was P1,700 a night for 2 persons including breakfast. Totally sweet! We're also just planning to tour the country--no shopping or expensive whatever sprees. We're also planning to cross Cambodia by bus. But I have to thoroughly research on that though 'coz it's more complicated than it sounds. So anyway, I'm quite certain I could just bring P5K and actually survive (not including the airport tax and terminal fee).

I placed Mich in charge of the tours. These are just some of the places I want to take a peek-see!

But I can't wait to eat authentic Vietnamese food! Yums! More tomorrow! Gotta run and go gyming. Muscle aches again. Argh.

First trip to Boracay! (Sept. 19-22)

Just got back from a 4-day vacation in Boracay and I'm already checking out Cebu Pacific's website so I could book again if they have an ongoing promo (wala pa so better luck next time)! Haha:P I went there with Mich and it was a lot of fun kahit 2 pcs. lang kami. :) I will be posting below our itinerary-- our activities, places we visited and dined in, it just might help other first timers (like us!) out there. Thanks to Anne B. for the tips. :)

Day 1 - haggardness day (zombie mode!)

* Boarded Cebu Pacific going to Kalibo at around 11 am (we bought our roundtrip tickets online for P1K each. Ain't it cheap?;))

* Arrived at Kalibo at 12 pm then proceeded to the information counter to confirm our transfer with Southwest Tours (we booked for a roundtrip airport transfer c/o our hotel). After giving us our identification stickers we were then led to a coaster/mini bus outside where we waited for other tourists. After 15 minutes we were on our way to the jetty port in Caticlan. After about 2 hours we arrived at the port:) We got off the bus to wait for a go signal to board the ferry/jetty (or whatever it's called). After the coordinator's check attendance routine (school ito? hahahaha) to make sure no one was left behind we were then led to our boat! Yipee! Korean invasion galore. Grabedad.

boat going to Boracay:)

* After 20 mins. we alighted the jetty. Finally! We were like lost puppies for 5 mins. then someone saw our name tags and led us to our hotel service. Yey. After about 20 mins. we arrived at our hotel's backdoor (backgate..or whatever). Haha. It was worth it. :) The receptionists are nice. The room is clean as well. I'm not super choosy when it comes to hotel rooms as long as the bed is comfy, the bathroom is clean and there's a hot and cold shower..it's perfect for me. :)

the way to our room

The only negative thing about our room is the door. Mich is the only one who can open it from outside. I was only able to open it from inside after 2 days. Haha.

Mich enjoying the bed. :P

i love the pink kumot!:P

As you can see from behind we made the extra bed as our tambakan. Hehe.
4 people can sleep in here. Super cheap na.

...sayang sana my sister and her bf came with us nalang. We paid P6800 for 4 days stay + roundtrip transfer (inclusive of the environmental fees already) + free breakfast. I think it's a pretty awesome deal. :)

* Aside from the room I also loved our free breakfast! It helps lalo na if you have activites in the morning. Tipid na efficient pa. I also love the beds (what's that called? tanning beds? sunbathing bed? hehe) at the beach front and the rattan swing (whatever that's called), It's super relaxing. I could just lie or sit there all day. :) By the way, rooms also come with a
washroom where you can smoke or wash your feet if you just came from the beach. Very convenient.

Breakfast :)

Lounge area

* Anyway, we spent our first day walking around. We we re so hungry when we got there so we ate at the first good resto we saw. Here we are at Bama's Bar and Grill...

The food was great. :) I ordered the grilled blue marlin, Mich ordered the grilled clams. We also ordered adobong kangkong para lang may veggies. Total is P250/person.

Out of fullness (kasuka sa busog) Mich allowed me to smoke. Hehe. We then headed back to the hotel for a supposed nap that ended up as 10 hours of sleep. Haha.

...Day 2 on my next post.
