How to Renew a Lost & Expired Driver's License in the Philippines

Hi guys! I'm back from my 10-day Thailand and Malaysia trip! :) So now time to work on some backlogs and pending travel posts. Before our trip, I made sure I renewed my driver's license. As a freelancer, I've always had a hard time claiming cheques and visiting buildings (where you had to leave an ID sa reception) because I lack government issued IDs. Sometime August last year, I renewed my expired and lost license. They gave me a temporary receipt for that. And then sometime December, I lost that receipt. Define burara? Waaah. So for the 2nd time, I had to apply for a new one. It was, however, an easy process contrary to popular belief! Well, at least now I guess. Here a rundown of my experience...

First, you have to make sure that the branch you're going to process renewals. I chose LTO-Tuazon branch because it was just 5 minutes away from my apartment. I got my student's permit from here and my first non-pro license in Manila. You may apply for license renewal at least 1 month before the expiration but not more than two (2) years after the expiration date.

I arrived at around 2:30pm because prior to that I had my Affidavit of Loss printed out. When I got there, the guard immediately asked me my intention and then told me to go to Window 1. No sighting of fixers! Wow. I immediately proceeded to Window 1 and then I was handed this "Application for Driver's License" form to fill out. It's also the same form for renewals.

Upon completion, I handed it over to the nice lady together with my affidavit. :) She told me to sit and wait for my name to be called.

During my renewal last year, I had to submit the application together with a medical certificate (there's a clinic next door that does that) and OR proving I'm physically & mentally fit to drive with 20/20 vision.

My Affidavit of Loss. It should be notarized!

Waiting time was just 15-20 minutes

While waiting, I noticed how there are no more lines and the waiting time has gotten shorter. I was called 20 minutes later and was told to proceed to Window 11 for payment. After payment, I was told to go back to Window 1 for claiming. I was out of there in more or less 30 minutes.

After verification by the LTO Evaluator (Window 2), I was then called again to pay the renewal fee at Window 11. Last year during the renewal of my expired license, after submission of documents at Window 1 and after verification, I was asked to proceed to Window 3 which was picture taking and biometrics (signature).  And then Window 11 for payment of fees.

Payment was easy breezy

Inside LTO Tuazon

Only paid P217.63 for duplicate receipt and license.

APPLICATION FOR DUPLICATE LICENSE (Valid license)

After payment and getting my new license receipt, I handed it over to the person at Window 1 and waited for my name to be called again.

Cute nila Kuya hehe! I also observed how the staff here are smiley and helpful:) Kudos!

Tada!!! Here's my new license! No fixers involved bwahaha. Note: This was from my last year's renewal pa kaya I got it na on my 2nd renewal. :)

I've always had this notion that errands like this could be a pain in the ass. But this proved that my perception about the agency and the whole process could be wrong. Sure, the system is far from perfect and there are still a lot to improve on (faster production and release of license plates and driver's license cards please and longer validity) but I've experienced (twice!) how things improved--in terms of service and efficiency. Hope tuloy tuloy na! :) How about you? How's your LTO experience? Share!:)

  7. Hello what if you were 17 years old and lost your Student Driver's Permit but got the duplicate a day after your 18th birthday. Are you still mandated to wait for 1 month to renew it to a Non-pro driver's license? Thank you for considering.

  8. I also got my student license here and yes, processing is smooth.

Would you know the process if pro license has been expired for more than 10 years ago? Trying to help my uncle. Thanks in advance. ;)

    1. I think same with my non-pro license that expired. It's like renewal but paying a certain fee according to the length of time the license has expired. :)

  9. I applied for my non pro license last may 24, last year. So I have 2 copies now with me, one that entails as my official receipt and a duplicate stamped with "temporary license" valid until may 24, 2017. My question is can I still drive without renewing the temporary license cause I highly doubt they'll be issuing a card. Will my receipt serve enough?? I applied April 2016, so in theory it'll still be valid until 2019

    1. It's best to go to the nearest LTO branch and clear it out. Mahirap na if you get caught and then hindi na pala valid. :(
